今から9年前の2008年頃の
ほぼ同時期だったと思います。
キャロウェイとナイキから
四角い形状のドライバーが出ました。
 
海外プロが使用するなどプロからも信頼を得ている・・・
という言葉もあり、
性能向上のためにあえてこういう形状に
という謳い文句だったと思います。
 
実際に、多分、性能は問題なかったでしょう。
が、その追随商品は出ませんでした。
売れなかったのだろうと思います。
 
やっぱり、これは性能うんぬんよりも
ひとえにデザインが好まれなかった
という気がします。
上の写真の比較のとおりです。
 
加えて、ナイキのサスクワッチ（写真左側）は、
練習場でそのインパクト音が凶器と化すため、
余計嫌われたのではという気がします。
 
「ペキョーン」「ペコーン」という
非常に甲高い耳障りな音で、
所有者がそれを打ち出すと周囲はみなそちらを向き、
「何でそんなクラブをこんな所で使うんだ？」
という非難の眼差しを向けたものです。
 
今考えると「非難の眼差し」なのに、
みんながそちらを見るものだから、
打つ人は「みんながびっくりしている」
と思っていたのかもしれません。
 
たいていの人は「どうだ！」
という顔で打っていましたので。
 
私はそのドライバーの所有者が横に来たりすると、
申し訳ないけど、即座に打席を移動していました。
 
クラブには性能以外に
デザイン性とインパクト音も重要
だと本当に思います。
 
で、ナイキはなんでこんな打球音のドライバーを
と思っていたのですが、
ある日、ヘッドスピードの速い人が
そのドライバーを使うと、凄くよい音が。
 
ということは、プロクラスの人で試打を重ね、
商品化したということなんでしょうか？
 
ヘッドスピードがあまり出ない人でも
爽快な音のするクラブがあれば、
すごく売れるような気がします。
 
いい音で気持ち良くラウンドしたいですから。
 
パターで有名なスコッティ・キャメロンなんて
実はインパクト音がすごく良いだけでは？
と思う時もあります。
 
使ったことないですけど。

Club design and impact sound
 

 
I think it was around the same time, about 9 years ago, in 2008.
Callaway and Nike both released square-shaped drivers.
 
It is trusted by professionals overseas and is used by many.
I think the slogan was that they deliberately made it this way to improve performance.
 
In reality, there were probably no problems with performance.
But no other products came out to follow suit.
I guess it just didn’t sell.
 
I think that this is because people didn’t like the design, rather than the performance. As you can see from the comparison in the photo above.
 
In addition, I feel that Nike’s Sasquatch (pictured on the left) was even more disliked because the sound of its impact could be turned into a lethal weapon on the practice field.
 
It made a very high-pitched, harsh sound, “Pekyoon” and “Pekoon,” and when the owner hit it, everyone around turned in his direction and gave him disapproving looks, as if to say,
“Why would you use a club like that in a place like this?”
 
Now that I think about it, it was a “disapproving look,” but since everyone was looking in that direction, the hitter may have thought he was “attracting everyone’s attention.”
 
Most people were typing with a look on their face that said, “Isn’t that amazing?”
 
Whenever the owner of the driver came next to me, I would feel sorry and immediately move to another box.
 
I truly believe that in addition to performance, design and the sound of impact are also important when it comes to clubs.
 
So I wondered why Nike was selling a driver that made that kind of impact sound, and then one day, when someone with a fast club head speed used the driver, it made a really great sound.
 
So, does that mean that it was only tested by professional level golfers before being commercialized?
 
I think if there was a club that produced a refreshing sound even for people who don’t have much head speed, it would sell really well.
 
We want to have a good time playing with good sound.
 
I sometimes wonder if Scotty Cameron, famous for his putters, just makes a great impact sound.
 
I’ve never used it though.
