ジャックおじさんと書いてしまいましたが、
それは感謝の意と親近感を込めてです。
 
サンベルに多くのお客様が来て頂ける理由として、
1番はもちろんサンベルがゴルフ場だからですが、
 
その次に来るのは多分
ジャック・ニクラウス設計という名前、
そしてその設計の面白さではないかと思います。
 
本当にジャックが設計したの？
名前だけではないの？
という疑問はあると思います。
 
それで実際に当時の責任者に話を聞いたことがあります。
 
まず、スタッフ2名が半年ほどこちらに滞在して、
地形等を見ながら基本設計を行ない、
 
概ね完成という時にヘリコプターでジャック
・ニクラウスが来場し、細かなチェックをした
上で、変更指示をしていったそうです。
(設計料はトップシークレットですが)
 
まだ現役でメジャー大会に出ていた頃ですから、
まあそんな感じになるだろうなというのはあります。
 
さて、ジャック・ニクラウスと言えば、
青木との全米オープンでの優勝争いが
日本人にとっては未だに記憶として残るのですが、
 
最も輝かしく、
史上最高のゴルファーの名を証明しているのが
メジャー18勝でしょう。
 
2位は14勝のタイガー・ウッズですが、
彼が33才で14勝目を上げた時、
ジャックの最後の優勝時年齢が46才でしたので、
 
世界中のゴルフ関係者はタイガー・ウッズが
いずれ間違いなく抜きさると思ったでしょう。
 
ところが、タイガーはこのまま14勝で終わりそうな気配です。
 
あのタイガーでも届かない優勝数を上げたゴルファーとして、
ニクラウスの評価はより高まったような気がします。

Sunbell Course Designer: Uncle Jack
I wrote “Uncle Jack” but it is with gratitude and a sense of closeness to him.
 
The main reason why so many customers come to Sunbell is, of course, because Sunbell is a golf course,
 
The next element, I think, is probably the name “Jack Nicklaus Designed” and how interesting the design is.
 
Did Jack really design it? Is it just the name? You may be wondering.
 
So I actually spoke to the person in charge at the time.
 
First, two staff members stayed here for about six months and created a basic design while looking at the terrain, etc.
 
When the course was almost complete, Jack Nicklaus arrived by helicopter, inspected it in detail, and made some changes.
(I can’t tell you the design fee though)
 
He was still active at the time and competing in major tournaments, so I guess that was the best he could do.
 
Speaking of Jack Nicklaus, his battle with Isao Aoki to win the U.S. Open is still fresh in the memories of many Japanese people.
 
Nonetheless, he remains one of the greatest golfers of all time, and his greatest achievement is winning 18 majors.
 
In second place is Tiger Woods with 14 wins, but he was 33 when he won his 14th tournament, while Jack was 46 when he last won.
 
Golf fans around the world probably assumed Tiger Woods would eventually overtake him.

However, it looks like Tiger might finish with 14 wins.
 
I feel that Nicklaus’s reputation has increased even more as a golfer who has won more tournaments than even Tiger could reach.
